Description. This knife is somewhat similar to knives made by some american cutlers in the latter part of 19th century. (the bridgeport ugn and implement company comes to mind. ) it has a 6 clipped point blade, with a false edge that is almost 3 long. Just under the spine, on the obverse upper flat, it is stamped j. Nowill & sons / sheffield in an oval.

We're not familiar with htis maker, but circa 1880s seems appropriate. The blade has been cleaned, sharpened, and polished, adn most of the surface other than the cutting edge has extremely fine salt-and-pepper pitting. We're not certain whether the thick checkered scales are horn or a synthetic (perhaps gutta percha? ), but they are ni very good condition overall.

The knife has a thick full tang, the edge of which is visible between the scales. Three brass pins hold the scales to the tang, and a one-piece brass guard completes the package. The supple borwn leather sheath is similar in form and construction to sheaths for many knives we've owned from this period. There is some light cracking (more like crazing) on the finish, but it is in fine shape overall with a very solid belt loop.
